J.L. Bhan

Prof. Jawahar Lal Bhan (b. 1941, Srinagar) joined as Curator, Sri Pratap Singh Museum, Srinagar and Head State Archaeology, Srinagar in the year 1964. Reputed Museologist of the State of Jammu and Kashmir, who documented thousands of images of the S.P.S. Museum, Srinagar, Jammu, Ladakh and Kashmir and later joined Kashmir University where he established Central Asian Museum and held later on the post of Director, Centre of Central Asian Studies. In the year 1990, under the auspices of University Grants Commission, Prof. Bhan joined the National Museum Institute of Conservation, Art History and Museology, New Delhi and got engaged in teaching Museology and Art History till his retirement in the year 2001. Since 1964, Prof. Bhan has been associated with Museum profession and has published dozens of research papers on Kashmir Art and Museum collections in various periodicals of National and International repute which has established him as a front rank Kashmiri scholar on the subject. He has travelled in India and abroad including the then USSR, Central Asia, UK and North America on various invitation assignments, participation of numerous National and International Seminars and memberships of advisory, expert committees of academic nature as an eminent scholar in the field. The present book is the first attempt to bring together for the first time in two volumes about five hundred Brā hmanical images of Kashmir which is based on his four decades vast experience, work and research. Currently he lectures in India, UK and North America on Kashmir Art and is engaged for his forthcoming third volume on Buddhist images of Kashmir. An Iconographical Study of Brā hmanical Sculptures
